Since the government’s restrictions were lifted on 4 July 2020, Aldeburgh has proved a very popular place to live, work and visit. Whilst it is great to see the town so vibrant, the volume of people has made safe social distancing quite challenging, particularly in certain areas of the High Street. Since the beginning of June, ATC has been working with the Aldeburgh Business Association, East Suffolk Council and SCC Highways to determine the best way forward to enable the High Street to function in as safe an environment as possible. It is fair to say that the process has not been an easy one!
Finally, ATC can confirm that a Highways contractor has appeared in the High Street today with barriers. Clearly the work couldn’t be carried out at 10 am with all the traffic already in place, so the understanding is that a team will return this evening to place ‘No Parking’ cones along the High Street followed by the installation of the barriers to enable safer social distancing (as outlined on the attached map) tomorrow.
Car parking spaces will still be available along the eastern side of the High Street. It is inevitable in these exceptional circumstances that some level of compromise is necessary and given that there are other parking facilities in town, the most sensible short-term measure was the introduction of the traffic cones and barriers. It is not a permanent measure and certainly not a perfect solution. The situation is constantly evolving and will be subject to constant review and amendment.
